While the main cast of Wicked: Part One blew audiences away with their incredible performance on the big screen in the movie musical, one cast member has wowed fans in a hilarious parody on Saturday Night Live (SNL). All hail Bowen Yang, the true ruler of Oz.
In the final episode of SNL this year, one member of the cast of comedians took an opportunity to nod to another iconic project they were in this year.
That’s right kids, while Bowen Yang played a minor role in the flick, the beloved comedian finally got to channel his inner Elphaba with his version of “Defying Gravity”. And he totally nailed IMHO.
During a sketch where Yang was dressed as a drone, the SNL and Wicked star broke into song by belting out a humorous spin on the song “Defying Gravity”.
But before watching the clip, you might need some context on this one, lol.
ICYMI: as the United States continue to descend into weirdness, one of the more peculiar things happening there right now is a bunch of drones have been spotted hovering in areas across the east coast.
Most curiously, as of yet nobody has claimed the drones or shared publicly what they are doing — including the US government.
And while invasions of privacy and conspiracies of aliens are all scary and whatnot, the mysterious flying objects are the perfect material for laughs on SNL.
So when Yang, dressed as one of said drones, was asked in the sketch how he felt about everyone assuming the worst of the drones, the comedian was quick to bring up another misunderstood flying “villain”.
“I feel like Elphaba, for real for real,” he said, referring to the main star of Wicked.
“Here’s what I think is going on: I’m the receptacle for everyone’s anxiety and agita about everything. For what be a drone, but a mirror to society… and potentially a killing machine.”
Bowen then segued seamlessly into a parody of the finale of the Wicked film: “But fine, I’ll be the villain. ‘Cos I’m the one you want, it’s me.”

Naturally, Bowen’s stans shared their joy online at seeing the beloved comic get to do more Wicked content, after he referenced the musical at various points across SNL‘s 50th season.
“Bowen is a national treasure,” wrote one fan on X.
Another wrote on TikTok that the comedian was: “Holding space for defying gravity.”
After many subtle nods to the blockbuster musical he starred in this year, it was a real Christmas treat to get to hear Bowen take on this Broadway classic.
Earlier this year, Bowen Yang made headlines when he dressed as internet icon Moo Deng to draw parallels to Chappell Roan and their shared rise to fame in 2024.
