The Boston Celtics have elected to waive reserve big man Wenyen Gabriel ahead of the NBA’s 2023-24 regular season per multiple reports. Gabriel, a four-year NBA veteran, spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and had decent stats with 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game with the Lakers.
The South Sudanese big man joined the Celtics during their 2023 training camp, but despite the team’s frontcourt depth taking a hit in the trade for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday when the team sent center Robert Williams III to the Portland Trail Blazers, Gabriel received only a non-guaranteed contract with no assurances beyond the preseason.
Ultimately, he was outperformed by two-way player Neemias Queta, who looks like a player Boston may consider offering a full roster spot to on the strength of his own preseason play with the Celtics.
