Boris Johnson woos MPs with thank-you drinks in Westminster office

BORIS Johnson appeared to try and woo MPs on Tuesday night as he held thank-you drinks for supporters in his Westminster office.

Former cabinet ministers Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg were spotted among a pack of around 60 Johnson loyalists who chinked glasses of champagne and white wine.

According to Politico, the room - which was a temporary HQ for his ill-fated leadership campaign recently - was also filled with lots of other leadership 2.0 backers including former Cabinet Office secretary Brendan Clarke-Smith and ex-party chairman Ben Elliot.

The former PM told MPs he would be supporting his former chancellor Rishi Sunak and the new government but made clear he’d be defending his legacy on Ukraine, Brexit, levelling up, and the 2019 Tory campaign vision.

He congratulated MPs saying they helped achieve a “total realignment in British politics”.

He was also heard cracking jokes as he compared managing the Tory parliamentary party to dealing with two kids on a long-haul flight.

Johnson flew back to the UK from the Dominican Republic with his wife and children as speculation grew about a comeback.

It is understood this was one in a series of drinks events Johnson is hosting over the coming months to thank supporters and Tory MPs.
