WITH just a little over a month left in office as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is set to go on holiday.
The "caretaker" PM is due to take some annual leave on Wednesday, and will reportedly remain in the UK receiving updates as required, according to his official spokesman.
Downing Street would not give details of where the Prime Minister would be spending his holiday, from Wednesday August 3 until the end of the week, and insisted he would still be running the country.
Asked who would be in charge while Johnson was away, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It will be the standard pattern.
“The Prime Minister will be updated as required … the deputy prime minister and, as ever with a Cabinet government, other ministers will be on hand to support as needed.”
In October 2021, Johnson jetted off to Marbella, Spain, for a break in a luxury villa while UK citizens faced food and fuel shortages, and thousands saw the removal of a £20 per week Universal Credit uplift.
It was Johnson's second holiday that year. In August he was forced to cut short a break in Somerset when the Taliban captured Kabul following the withdrawal of Western troops from Afghanistan.
Although it has not been confirmed where the Johnson's are visiting, it is unlikely to be Scotland.
In 2020, Johnson was reportedly swept out to sea and nearly drowned during a trip to the Applecross peninsula on the west coast.
Johnson said he would never return to the country for a vacation following the incident, telling friends “over my dead body”.
Johnson and his wife Carrie held a lavish party at the weekend to celebrate their wedding, as their marriage took place when coronavirus restrictions were in force in 2021, limiting the festivities at the time.
Asked if the holiday was a belated honeymoon, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “I don’t know. I’m not getting into what type of holiday it is.”
The holiday comes as Johnson’s premiership draws to an end, with Tory leadership rivals Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak due to replace him in No 10 on September 6.
Opponents of the Prime Minister have already accused him of having “basically checked out” from his job in No 10.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer levelled the criticism at him for failing to attend Cobra meetings during the heatwave which saw record UK temperatures in July.
