Boris Johnson admits his Partygate statements 'did not turn out to be correct'

Boris Johnson has submitted his defence to claims he lied to Parliament with his partygate denials after handing over a dossier in the run-up to a televised grilling. The former prime minister’s allies urged the cross-party Privileges Committee to publish his testimony “as soon as possible” after turning it over on Monday afternoon.

Mr Johnson was first asked to provide a written submission in July last year, but provided it 48 hours before his televised questioning by the committee on Wednesday afternoon. The committee confirmed it received the evidence, key to Mr Johnson’s political future, at 2.32pm on Monday.

In his written evidence to the Privileges Committee, Mr Johnson writes: “So I accept that the House of Commons was misled by my statements that the Rules and Guidance had been followed completely at No 10.
