Boris Johnson has demanded an inquiry into the scenes in Paris where Liverpool fans were sprayed with tear gas while queuing to get into the Champions League final.
The Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “The footage from the Stade de France this weekend was deeply upsetting and concerning. We know many Liverpool fans travelled to Paris in good time to support their team in one of the biggest matches of the season and we are hugely disappointed by how they were treated.
“Fans deserve to know what happened so we are urging UEFA to work closely with the French authorities on a full investigation and to publish those findings.”
Liverpool fan and former Conservative leader Lord Michael Howard called French claims that fake tickets were to blame for crowd issues “nonsense”.
“I was in a queue, in a crush, with my wife, which could have become very dangerous,” he told the BBC. "We were waiting for the gate to which we’d been told to go to open, and it wasn’t opened.”
He added: “It may be the case that there were some people with fake tickets”, but claimed: “This is something you anticipate at events of this kind.”
The peer went on: “You make arrangements so that if someone presents themselves with a fake ticket they stand aside and you let the people with genuine tickets in.”
Lord Howard said that “at times it looked as though it could get quite nasty.”
Calling for a “thorough, independent investigation, independent of UEFA and independent of the French”, the ex-Home Secretary added: “We must make sure that nothing of the kind happens again.”
Earlier, Culture Minister Chris Philp insisted there was "no obvious justification" for the behaviour of French police at Liverpool's match against Real Madrid.
"I was horrified to see those pictures of fans, including some children, disabled fans, being pepper-sprayed by French police,” he said. “From the pictures I saw there was no obvious justification for that kind of behaviour.”
He added: “I really am concerned by it, the Government are as well, and we need UEFA to properly investigate exactly what happened and get to the bottom of it."
