Boris Johnson hires hot-shot private lawyers to handle police Partygate questions

The Prime Minister has hired hot shot lawyers to deal with the Met’s questions on Partygate.

Boris Johnson and his private legal experts are to churn out excuses this week as the Commons is in recess.

His lawyers will argue he is in a “unique” situation as No10 is his home and workplace, meaning he did not technically breach any Covid rules.

But senior law lecturer Dr Nick McKerrell suggested the Tory leader could return the questionnaire blank as he has the right to remain silent.

The Glasgow Caledonian University expert told the BBC it is “unusual” for police to use one in a criminal probe.

He added: “How do you speak to someone over things that happened months ago, especially when the maximum offence is a fine?”

The PM attended at least seven out of 12 lockdown parties being probed by the scandal-ridden Met. It is not known if his wife has Carrie received a police questionnaire.

She has been linked to three gatherings including the “bring your own booze” drinks party in May 2020 and the PM’s birthday party that she organised.

Mr Johnson is said to have banned staff from Downing Street’s garden.

It means only he and Carrie, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata and their two kids will be given access without approval, the Mail on Sunday reports.

Departing Met chief Dame Cressida Dick is expected to oversee the investigation for at least two months as her successor is chosen.

Meanwhile, former aide Dominic Cummings has slammed Tories for not acting sooner to oust Mr Johnson.

He tweeted: “Great work Tory MPs leaving this crippled joke of a PM spending [the] next 7 days bunkered down with lawyers trying to remember all his different lies while another major global crisis unfolds.”

Mr Johnson was set to travel to the North to shore up support.

But that may be difficult as he tries to de-escalate Russian aggression over Ukraine and deal with briefings.

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis said the PM is “absolutely focused on the job in hand”.
