Border Security Expert Chris Clem Discusses Executive Action Impact

United States Border Patrol agents patrol the border in El Centro, California

In the next two days, President Biden is set to roll out a sweeping executive action on the border that will significantly limit migrants' ability to seek asylum at the southern border and automatically deny entrance to migrants once the number of people encountered by American border patrol agents exceeds a new daily threshold. This action is aimed at clamping down on illegal crossings between ports of entry, similar to measures taken during the Trump administration.

Retired border patrol chief Chris Clem expressed concerns about the timing of these actions, stating that the damage from over seven million illegal entries in the last 3.5 years has already been done. He emphasized the need for a clear signal to cartels to prevent vulnerabilities along the southwest border.

Clem highlighted the importance of addressing border security as a national security issue, pointing out recent incidents involving illegal Chinese nationals and individuals from Jordan attempting to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. He stressed the need to secure the border first before addressing immigration challenges.

Regarding potential executive orders, Clem explained that while 212F may address inadmissibility for those seeking entry through legal channels, immediate deportation is necessary for those who have already crossed the border illegally. He underscored the distinction between asylum seekers and economic migrants.

The conversation also touched on missed opportunities in Congress over the past four years to address border security effectively. Clem noted that former President Trump's focus on illegal immigration as a campaign issue may have influenced decision-making.

Despite differing views on past legislative efforts, Clem emphasized the urgency of securing the border to protect American interests. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach that combines border security measures with immigration policies.

As the discussion concluded, Clem shared insights into his personal interests, including music and sports memorabilia, reflecting a balanced approach to enjoying life amidst challenging circumstances.
