Boots Advantage Card holders risk losing loyalty points amid rule change

Boots customers have been issued an urgent warning regarding their loyalty points as part of a new shake-up to the company's Advantage Card scheme. Shoppers risk having their points taken off in less than two weeks as the beauty and pharmacy chain has changed how often members will need to use their card to be able to keep their points.

As it stands, points on an Advantage Card only get wiped off if it hasn't scanned it for two years. However, from June 20 this will all change and shoppers will lose points after one year instead. Although customers don't need to spend their points, they just need to make sure they scan their card at Boots.

The email sent out to customers explaining the changes says: "Thank you for being one of our valued Boots Advantage Card members. Whilst it won’t impact you as a regular Boots shopper, we need to let you know that we’re updating our Boots Advantage Card terms and conditions.

"From 20th June 2022, we will remove Boots Advantage Card points from accounts that haven’t been used* for one year, instead of the current two-year period. As long as you shop with your Boots Advantage Card at least once a year, your points will always be there ready for you to use them."

The way the Advantage Card Scheme works is by rewarding cardholders with points for every £1 they spend in-store or online. Each point is worth 1p when spent, meaning someone with 100 points on their card would have £1 to spend, and someone with 1,000 points would have £10.

Members can also get personalised discounts sent to them, as well as special reductions in stores. Signing up to Boots' Advantage Card Scheme is free and can be done on the Boots website. Currently, there are around 14.7 million active members.

It can be easy to forget about your loyalty points. The Mirror consumer columnist Lynn Beattie, aka Mrs Mummypenny, recently found £380 in lost points. She said: "I am very good at remembering to use them to build up my points, but not so good at keeping a check on the rewards I have earned.

"I urge you to go check your loyalty points and see how much you can find to spend on maybe shopping essentials or a treat." She added: "Upon checking my old school Boots Advantage card, I have £5 worth of points saved up. These have been transferred to the app and will be spent next time I am in store."
