Boost for Renfrewshire schools as £500,000 pitch and games area project gets green light

Plans to upgrade an artificial pitch at Erskine’s Park Mains High and add a multi-use games area at Kirklandneuk Primary have been given the green light.

A £300,000 contract award for the works at Park Mains and the £200,000 investment at Kirklandneuk, in Renfrew, were rubber-stamped by Renfrewshire councillors.

Allsports Construction and Maintenance will carry out the uplift and replacement of the 2G hockey pitch at Park Mains as well as associated fencing and floodlight replacements.

The works are scheduled to begin on Monday, February 13, 2023 and be completed by Tuesday, April 11.

Councillor Michelle Campbell, an SNP representative for Erskine and Inchinnan, told the finance, resources and customer services policy board: “Both myself and Councillor [Iain] Nicolson have raised this for investment into this area, quite significantly, and I’m really pleased to see this investment for the local community.

“Our efforts on this have been very strong and we will continue to make sure we fight to ensure that the communities of Erskine and Inchinnan get the best out of the resources that are available, as is fair and equitable across the whole of Renfrewshire.”

Elected members authorised the head of corporate governance to award the contract and its sum of £311,175.57, excluding VAT, to Allsports Construction and Maintenance, with the cash to come from a £1.2 million pot designated for pitch refurbishments across the Renfrewshire.

Councillors also approved a £200,000 contract for a multi-use games area at Kirklandneuk Primary at the meeting.

Doe Sport (North) landed that particular project after a tendering exercise.

The contractor will carry out the construction of the facility at the site in Ard Road.

Councillor Campbell said: “This is another really good piece of news and, in particular, for this community.

“This has been a well-wanted space that will serve them well.”

She said that a MUGA had been a request of the head teacher and parent council for a long time, before adding: “I absolutely commend the work that’s been done on this piece.”

The date of possession of the site is Monday, January 9, with the works due to be completed by Friday, March 3.

A report to the board said: “The contract will facilitate the construction of a new multi-use games area at Kirklandneuk Primary School which will provide the council with a new asset and school with a modern new play area.”

Kirklandneuk is not the only school set to benefit from such a facility, with Howwood Primary School also due to land a MUGA in the future.

Last month, the Semple View school’s parent council made a successful request for funding for the project.

A total of £50,000 will go towards creating an all-weather surface at the facility, which can be used for a variety of sports and activities.
