NEW DELHI: Motherhood must not result in women being passed over for promotions and hiring at a time when entry of women in every profession is increasing, a Supreme Court justice said on Friday.
“As far as India is concerned, it is rather disappointing. A trend within the labour force in general and in the legal profession in particular is that although the entry of women is increasing, talent is not being retained,” said justice B V Nagarathna, during the inauguration of a creche at Delhi High Court, meant for use by both lawyers and litigants. “One reason for this is the inability to find an alternative caregiver when they become parents and are away at work.”
