Bono delights fans as he returns to childhood home

Bono found what he was looking for yesterday when he returned to his childhood home.

The U2 frontman visited the modest semi-detached property in Cedarwood Road, Ballymun, North Dublin. His trip was part of a documentary on his life, to coincide with the release of his autobiography Surrender.

He posed for pictures with the current owners and reminisced about growing up. Bono also bumped into a student on her way to her debs ball – and curtsied to her.

Lucie Dunne, 18, from Glasnevin in Dublin, was making her way to her school, St Mary’s Holy Faith Convent. Her uncle Trevor said: “He used to live on Cedarwood Road. And he was in with Mrs Ryan at No 10 and they were reminiscing in the house so we stood around and waited for a couple of minutes.

“I think the word spread very quickly that Bono was about so a few of the neighbours came out with their kids. The traffic actually stopped. He came out and he was really generous with his time. He stayed for about 20 minutes, and he came over towards me and he saw Lucie and he said, ‘Oh my God, the debutante. I’m in the presence of royalty’.

“He sort of went down [on] one knee and gave Lucie a little twirl and was really complimentary to her. I think he said to her to mind herself and her friends and to have a great night but be home early and he started laughing.”

Bono met Mrs Ryan and her family and daughter Lorraine posted pictures of the gathering on her social media. She said: “Mam was delighted to welcome Bono back to his childhood home and share some wonderful memories with us.

“Can’t wait to read his book. It was great to meet with him again and get some photos with the man himself.”

Bono’s parents lived in the street when he was born Paul Hewson in 1960, and he lived there until about 1986. He wrote a song about the property on U2’s 2014 album Songs Of Innocence.
