Bono and The Edge show US star David Letterman around Dublin in new trailer for documentary

The first trailer has been released for David Letterman’s St Patrick’s Day special, which will see him tour Dublin with Bono and The Edge.

Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming with Dave Letterman, which will air on Disney+ on March 17, chronicles the TV host’s first trip to Ireland. The two U2 members said they invited him to Dublin “to talk about our songs” while Larry Mullen Jr was recovering from an injury and Adam Clayton was “off making an art show”.

Speaking in the trailer, Bono says: “Traditional storytelling is part of Dublin. It’s in our music.

"Our songs, they’re still growing, they’re still emerging.” The trailer includes a preview of a special show at Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre, with the rock stars examining their relationship with music on-stage with Letterman.

They also discuss some of their older songs, exploring how some stayed the same while others changed to fit their current position in life. bono tells Letterman: “We wanted to strip away the artifice that inevitably emerges after you’ve been around this long.”

The Edge adds: “We seem to thrive doing what’s never been done before.” The pair also give a special performance at McDaid’s Pub in the city centre as part of the documentary, while Letterman visits a number of locations around the capital.

The film will focus on the extraordinary relationship between Bono and The Edge and how it has developed over 45 years to become one of the most remarkable songwriting partnerships in the history of rock ’n’ roll. Comedian Letterman has known the band members for 25 years but had previously only spent time with the pair in the US.

As well as being their special guest at an intimate performance at the former Ambassador Cinema building at the top of O’Connell Street, the presenter embarks on his own exploration of the city. He visits the legendary Forty Foot swimming spot on a freezing cold morning and rides the Dart commuter train north from Co Wicklow.

Letterman also inspires a brand new U2 song and narrowly escapes having to perform at a sing-song at the legendary McDaid’s Pub off Grafton Street.

There he meets an equally legendary bunch of artists and musicians including Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, Imelda May, Loah, Saint Sister, Grian Chatten of Fontaines DC and Dermot Kennedy, whose voice Bono describes as a “sonic boom”.

During his trip, Letterman also pays a visit to Cavistons in Glasthule, a fish shop that has been in business for more than 75 years.
