A bomber jet has been filmed appearing to crash into a block of flats in Russia today (Monday, October 17). The footage, which is unverified and has been shared on social media networks, shows a large blaze said to be at a building in Yeysk in the south west of the country.
Footage shared online which has not been confirmed appears to show the pilot ejecting before impact. According to Russian news agency TASS, a Su-34 bomber crashed into a residential area. The Russian Defence Ministry said the incident occurred after an engine failure on take off.
In a statement reported by TASS, the defence ministry said: "On October 17, 2022, a Su-34 aircraft crashed upon a climb during its training flight from a military airfield in the Southern Military District. The plane crashed within the city limits of Yeysk.
"The plane’s fuel caught fire after the Su-34 crashed into the courtyard of a residential building."
The city of Yeysk is situated on the Sea of Azov separating southern Ukraine from southern Russia. A city of about 90,000 people, it's home to a large Russian air base.
