Bomb squads descended onto Largs harbour this afternoon after an item was found on a boat.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and HM Coastguard crews scrambled Largs ' Yacht Haven on Irvine Road in Ayrshire after receiving the alarm at 3.30pm. The marina was evacuated as a precaution while the area was sealed off by police, reports Glasgow Live.
As of 7pm, nobody had been allowed back into the site and Irvine Road was still closed. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Police did not disclose the nature of the alleged item on the boat, nor the type of vessel allegedly involved.
One stricken visitor claimed that 'four pontoons' were 'cordoned off' by officers as a 'bomb disposal van' arrived at the marina. They wrote on social media: "Just leaving Largs Marina, four pontoons have been cordoned off by police. A bomb disposal van has arrived, blue lights flashing."
Police Scotland confirmed their attendance at the scene to Glasgow Live on Sunday evening.
A force spokeswoman said: "At around 3.30pm on Sunday, September 11 we were called to Largs Yacht Haven, Irvine Road, Largs, to a report of an item found on a boat. Officers are in attendance alongside EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal). The area has been evacuated as a precaution and the road is currently closed.”
