A bomb disposal unit has carried out a 'controlled explosion' on an historic ordnance device found in a shed.
Burnfoot Avenue in Troon was locked down last night with residents forced out their homes as the bomb squad and cops raced to the scene around 4.15pm yesterday.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were then called to detonate the device.
A bomb disposal robot was called in to safety detonate the historic ordnance.
Ayrshire Live understands that the device was an ex-military grenade.
Around 50 homes were evacuated including a sheltered housing unit, with elderly residents taken to the Walker Hall.
The road was closed down with a police cordon set up.
It is understood residents were able to return to their homes just before 11pm just after the controlled explosion.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of historic ordnance found within a shed at a property on Burnfoot Avenue in Troon around 4.15pm on Thursday, April 20.
“The road was closed and some neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal attended and made the item safe by carrying out a controlled explosion
"The cordon has been removed and all residents have been allowed to return to their homes.”
