Bomb disposal squad called after 'historic grenade' found on Whitley Bay beach

Bomb disposal experts have been called in after a 'historic grenade' was found on Whitley Bay beach.

Emergency services were called after the device was discovered on the popular beach on Friday afternoon.

The person who found the suspected historic grenade then transported it to an address in Cramlington.

The bomb disposal team was called out to the Norwich Way area where they have erected a cordon around a property.

The device has now safely been detonated and disposed of.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 1.50pm today (Friday) we were contacted by a member of the public who had found a suspected historic grenade on the beach in Whitley Bay and had transported it to an address in the Norwich Way area of Cramlington.

After being discovered on the popular and busy beach, the device was then taken to an address in Cramlington (Google Maps)

“Officers attended the address, and as a precaution, bomb disposal experts were called to carry out checks into the object.

“The grenade has now been safely detonated and disposed of. We would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation, as well as the caller who contacted police.”
