Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt on MK Dons win, set piece goal, clean sheet & Peterborough aim

Bolton Wanderers made it two wins on the bounce and climbed back into the League One top six with a win on the road over MK Dons.

Wanderers took the lead when Gethin Jones was brought down in the box by Dawson Devoy. Dion Charles stepped up to thump home from the penalty spot and give the Whites the advantage.

The visitors doubled their lead after the break when Jones rose highest to head home from Jack Iredale's free-kick. The win could have been by a greater margin but Wanderers picked up a valuable three points which sees them rise to fifth in the table.

After the game, Wanderers boss Ian Evatt gave his immediate reaction to the win and here's what he had to say.

How pleasing was that?

“I’m pleased. It’s nice to get the away monkey off our back and win away from home and winning here is always a difficult thing to do. But I thought from minute one we showed good energy, good intensity.

“There wasn’t any rustiness from that 10 day break and I think we grabbed control of the game pretty early on and the worry for me was we’d conceded moments and goals against the run of play and also not taken our chances, so I thought the penalty gave us a little bit more confidence and belief.

“If I’m being ultra critical second half, I think we should have scored more, but as away performances go that was pretty solid.”

You had a clean sheet and you weren't really tested - is that a credit to the back line?

“Yeah and credit to them that we’ve kept our focus and concentration because I think we’ve played pretty well all season to be honest. I just think the games we’ve lost - Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth - I think we just conceded in bad moments and a lack of concentration.

“As a team, not just the back lads, but I thought we were on it tonight. We respected them, they can be a dangerous team and our high press was fantastic and the amount of regains we had, it’s just making sure we’re clinical in those moments but away performances as they go, that’s pretty solid.”

A set piece goal, what a delivery from Jack Iredale and a bullet header from Gethin Jones?

“It’s about time because the delivery first half was awful! But it was a brilliant ball in and a great header from Gethin. We’re pleased to score from a set play and if I’m being ultra critical after that, we should have and could have scored more.

“I’m pleased, but it’s only three points and now we must focus to Saturday. This week is a big week for us and it defines whether we’ve had a really good start or a decent one and I think this is the first step towards a good start but we need now to go into Saturday full of belief, full of confidence, re energised and go again.”
