Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt on Doncaster Rovers win, goals & Accrington team selection hint

Bolton Wanderers returned to winning ways in League One with a 2-1 win on the road against struggling Doncaster Rovers.

Wanderers took the lead after the break thanks for Amadou Bakayoko slotting home after being found in the box by Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

The hosts got back on level terms thanks to substitute Mipo Odubeko smashing past James Trafford to give Donny hope.

But Wanderers scored not long after when former Donny man Kieran Sadlier fired home a marvellous volley from Dapo Afolayan's pass to ensure the visitors took home the three points on Good Friday.

Wanderers are back in action on Easter Monday when they host Accrington Stanley at the University of Bolton Stadium and here's Ian Evatt's immediate reaction after the victory at the Eco-Power Stadium.

A good win?

“Very good. I thought they were excellent. I thought they were well prepared. It was more or less on the line for them today so they chucked everything at it and it was a really good and spirited performance from them, but we had to ride the storm a little bit in the second half but we’ve got some very good forward players and they’ve come up with the goods for us, but I thought it was a good games of football.

“I thought it was entertaining and a bit of needle and spice but there’s nothing wrong with that. We all want to win and they want to win and credit to them. I thought they performed very well.”

Two very well taken and well worked goals?

“We’d highlighted from our analysis work that they were susceptible from crosses in particular and we’ve scored from two crosses and probably could have scored a few more from crosses first half in particular.

“But two very well taken goals. I’m pleased because I think it was a challenging games today. I think they threw so much at us and we had to dig in and fight and scrap. I thought our attitude and professionalism was excellent.”

You’re talked in the build-up that this was the type of display you’re looking for?

“Yeah absolutely. As I’ve said in previous weeks it’s the type of game that has kind of been our Kryptonite a little bit coming to places like this against struggling teams and when they put it on us, we’ve sometimes wilted.

"That’s not something we’re proud of but we win or we learn and we keep saying that and we’ve learnt a lot this season about what we need to do when we come to places like this and how we manage the game.

"I think at times it was very good, but also at times second half we were a bit naive. It became a bit transitional, especially after we got the goal and the gaps between our lines became too big.

"We weren’t connected as a team. It became a basketball game and then we attack, they attack and it was whoever got the punch in last really and fortunately for us, we’ve got the punch in last. But we’ll learn from that again today, we’ll show them footage and improve again.”

What’s your thought process now with a very quick turnaround to face Accrington?

“I’d already picked the two teams before the game to be honest. It’s just the way it has to be. It’s a really challenging time for everyone, they’re physically drained and tired and with the injuries we’ve got, everyone is having to step up.

"The one place we have got the luxury of making changes is the forward areas which hasn’t always been the case so, read into that what you will but we’ll be ready come Monday.

"We’re excited to play at home, our fans’ support was just breathtaking, real hairs standing up on the back of your neck moments and times and thank you again for their amazing support because it really does help get thee players over the line.”
