Romania's Ana Bogdan has sprung a major surprise to advance to the quarter-finals of the Japan Open with a 6-0 7-6 (7-5) victory over No.4 seed Marie Bouzkova, of the Czech Republic, in Osaka.

Bogdan, who reached the third round of this year's French Open, overcame a 3-1 deficit in the tiebreak to finish in just under 2 hours, setting up a match with unseeded Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands.
