A search and rescue effort has ended in tragedy after the body of a 14-year-old boy was pulled from a river on Queensland's Fraser Coast.

The boy was being towed behind a boat on a tube when he fell off and disappeared from view just after 10am on Sunday.

Police divers recovered the teen's body in the Mary River at Owanyilla just after 6pm.

A search and rescue was initially undertaken, with the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter called to assist.

"There was no sighting of the teen by the helicopter crew who returned to base around 1.30pm,"  RACQ LifeFlight said in a statement on Sunday.

"The teen was believed to have been being towed behind a boat on an inflatable tube when he fell off and failed to resurface."

Police were assisting the boy's family and said the death was not suspicious.
