Body of man pulled from the water after falling from cliffs in Orkney

A man who had been reported missing to police has sadly died after falling from cliffs in Orkney.

The alarm was raised at around 9.45pm in the Birsay area of the island following concern for a person.

HM Coastguard rescue teams from Stromness and Kirkwall were tasked to assist with the search around the shoreline in the area.

A special search helicopter - Rescue 900 - was also drafted in to assist amid fading daylight.

Despite the best efforts of all services involved, a body was tragically recovered from the water at around 1.50am on Monday.

Formal identification has yet to take place however the death is not being treated as suspicious, Police Scotland have confirmed.

A statement from HM Coastguard - Orkney & Shetland said: “At approximately 21:45 on Sunday 12th June the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Shetland was contacted by Police Scotland to reports of a missing person in the Birsay area of Orkney.

"Stromeness and Kirkwall Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked and initiated a coastal search in the area.

“At the request of the Coastguard Search Advisor and Duty Coastal Officer, Coastguard Rescue 900 based in Sumburgh and RNLI Stromness Lifeboat were also tasked to assist with the search.

“At approximately 01:50 on Monday 13th June the casualty was located by Coastguard Rescue Teams but they had sadly passed away.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams remained on scene to assist Police Scotland. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the casualty at this time.”
