Body of elderly East Lothian woman found in the Firth of Forth

Police have said that a major rescue operation was launched after reports of concern for an elderly woman in the Firth of Forth by Longniddry, East Lothian.

They say that they were alerted to the incident at around 11.15pm on the evening of Monday 6 February and it is understood that both police and the coastguard raced to the scene.

Tragically the woman was pronounced dead after being recovered from the water and officers say that there are no suspicious circumstances relating to the death.

It is believed that the 73-year-old woman’s body was recovered by rescue workers close to Longniddry in East Lothian.

A helicopter had been sent out to assist with the efforts and police say that a report has now been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for a woman in the Longniddry area around 11.15pm. The body of the 73-year-old was sadly recovered from the Firth of Forth following a search by police and coastguard.

“She was pronounced dead at the scene. There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
