The body of a 49-year-old man who went missing after his boat capsized in Sydney's North Harbour nearly a week ago has been found.

Emergency services launched a large-scale ocean search for Darren Huber after he fell overboard on the way to Dobroyd Head in the early hours of Saturday.

The operation involved officers from Surf Life Saving, Marine Rescue NSW, PolAir and other agencies over five days.

NSW Police said it received a call to Middle Harbour on Wednesday morning after two fisherman located a body in the water near Washaway Bay in Clontarf.

The body was recovered and identified as Mr Huber.

NSW Police said Mr Huber, his dog Max, and a 25-year-old man had boarded the 12-foot runabout and left Tunks Park boat ramp, near Cammeray, on Friday evening.

The men had known each other for years and were friends, and Mr Huber was reportedly interested in purchasing the vessel.

However, at about 3am a large wave flipped the boat, sending its occupants overboard. Both men had clung on to the side of the vessel but Mr Huber was swept away.

The boat had no life jackets, safety gear or lights on board.

The younger man was spotted in the waters by local fishermen shortly after and was retrieved by surf life savers on jet skis who took him to Little Manly Beach hours later.

He was treated by paramedics for hypothermia and abrasions to his arms and wrist, but did not require hospitalisation.

The dog, Max, was found later in the day in a nearby cave in Balgowlah Heights by a group of friends celebrating a birthday.

Police said the dog was taken to a vet.

Authorities on the weekend said the incident was a timely reminder for people to take safety precautions when heading into the water, including by carrying life jackets and communication devices.
