A leading body language expert has analysed Liz Truss’ first performance at PMQs as prime minister.
Speaking about Truss who now holds the highest office in the land, Darren Stanton, speaking on behalf of BonusCodeBets said her "voice cracks and increased blink rate reveals Truss’ lack of confidence" and that she "mirrors Margaret Thatcher’s behaviour".
Stanton said: “Liz Truss initially started with a very strong voice and maintained good eye contact and positive body language when speaking. However, several things started to unfold when Keir Starmer began questioning her on her policy about energy price caps and utility companies making billions.
“Voice cracks in certain places showed a change in emotion and her blink rate tripled, which both point to an increase in stress levels. This could mean she has no confidence in what she was saying in her reply to Starmer.
“It also suggests that she could be aware of some things that she cannot disclose.”
A tactic employed by many politicians is to repeat answers to have a few more seconds to formulate a response. Stanton said Truss came over “reasonably controlled”.
Further analysing Truss’ performance, Stanton added: “There are some chinks in her armour concerning her body language and delivery. She would often repeat an answer several times, which is a strategy to gain more time to consider what she was going to do.”
It has been widely reported that Liz Truss is a fan of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Stanton said: “It is not difficult to see that she has a number of behavioural traits that Margaret Thatcher had.
“This includes the way she leans on the dispatch box. Some of her battles are quite reminiscent of the way Thatcher rebutted the opposition.”
