Body found in search for Haydn Griffiths last seen swimming in River Mersey

A body has been found in the search for missing Haydn Griffiths who was last seen swimming in the River Mersey.

The 23-year-old, from Lowton in Wigan, went missing after swimming towards wind turbines off the coast of New Brighton, Wirral, at about 10.30pm last Tuesday, when the country saw record temperatures. A huge search was launched by the Coastguard and lifeboat volunteers along with police and the fire service, but was called off at around 5pm on Wednesday, July 20 after 18 hours.

Today (July 25), a Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed the body of a man had been found on Sunday night. The death is being treated as 'unexplained' at this stage.

The spokeswoman said: "At this time the death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause. The body is yet to be formally identified."

Last Friday, Haydn's sister Megan Griffiths posted a touching message on Instagram on what would have been his 24th birthday. She wrote: "Happy 24th Birthday Haydn!! You are the coolest, craziest, most kind and loving brother in the whole wide world and we WILL KEEP SEARCHING FOR YOU! Love you all the world H! xxxxx"

She previously described her 'little bro' as 'an athlete' and said she believed he was 'out there and fighting'. Megan went on to thank the emergency services and the dozens of people who had been searching with them.
