Body found in NSW floodwaters believed to be that of missing 89-year-old man William Swiggs

A body believed to be that of missing man 89-year-old Queensland man William Swiggs has been found just 25 minutes north of where he last contacted his family seven weeks ago.

Emergency services were alerted to a vehicle in floodwaters at Barmedman, south of West Wyalong at about 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Local police and crews from the SES retrieved the vehicle and discovered a body, which is yet to be formally identified.

Mr Swiggs was reported missing to Riverina Police on November 15.

He was last known to be travelling from Gympie in Queensland to South Australia via Victoria in late October.

He last contacted family seven weeks ago on November 2, when he stopped in the Forbes area and refuelled at a service station in Temora.

Riverina police issued an appeal for public information about Mr Swiggs's whereabouts almost a month ago on November 23.

Barmedman, where the body was found, is about 25 minutes north of Temora.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
