Body found in canal in hunt for missing man who failed to return home last month

A body found in a London canal is believed to be that of a man who went missing a month ago, police have said.

Nathan Cole, 32, was last seen on January 21 in Walthamstow, north east London.

The Met Police have now confirmed a body was discovered at a canal in Edmonton on Friday morning, with the force believing it to be Nathan's.

Mr Cole, who worked for London School of Economics, was reportedly planning to go to a gig in Camden on the night he disappeared but did not attend.

Appealing for information on his whereabouts, his family at the time said his disappearance was "out of character" and described him as "gregarious and outgoing".

In the days after he vanished, investigators revealed he had bought four cans of lager from a shop in east London, before boarding a bus towards Chingford.

CCTV later showed him walking along a street in Walthamstow at 11.17pm that night, which was the last known sighting.

A Met spokesperson said emergency services were called to the canal shortly after 8am on Friday after a man was found unresponsive in the River Lea Navigation.

The spokesperson said: "Formal identification will take place in due course, but officers believe that the man is Nathan Cole.

"We await the results of the specialist post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

"Nathan’s family have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers."

Nathan's family have asked for privacy in the meantime.

A file is now being prepared for the coroner.
