A body has been found at the River Ericht near to Parkhead Road in Blairgowrie.
Formal identification has yet to take place but the family of Harold Heeley (96), reported missing earlier in the day, have been informed.
The discovery of the body was made at around 10.30am today (December 20).
Tayside Police believed there are no suspicious circumstances around the death and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
Officers have been asking members of the public if they can assist with tracing Mr Heeley, who was last seen at around 5.55am this morning in the Bankhead area of the town.
He is described as around 5ft 8ins, of slim build with white hair and was wearing a navy blue dressing gown, light blue pyjamas and dark blue slippers.
Sergeant James Longden said: “Harold has left his home without the clothing he needs to be away for any length of time and concerns are growing for his welfare. He has left his hearing aids behind so may not hear what is going on around him.
“I am urging anyone who has seen Harold or knows where he might be to get in touch with us immediately.
“If you are out and about please keep an eye out for Harold. I am also asking people to check their sheds and outbuildings in case Harold has sought shelter.”
Anyone who can help should call police immediately on 101, quoting incident number 0544 of Tuesday, December 20.
