BMW is recalling hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide due to a potential fire hazard, the German luxury carmaker said on Wednesday.
The global recall affects a mid-six-figure number of cars, Reuters reported quoting a BMW spokesperson, without specifying an exact figure. Trade publication kfz-betrieb reported that about 575,000 vehicles across various model series are impacted.
BMW said product inspections and customer complaints revealed that the starter motor in the affected vehicles could be defective. Excessive wear on the magnetic switch after a high number of engine starts may make it harder or even impossible to start the car.
"In the worst-case scenario, this could lead to a vehicle fire,” the spokesperson said.
