BMW PGA champion Shane Lowry can't resist dig at LIV Golf rebels after Wentworth win

BMW PGA champion Shane Lowry once again let everyone associated with LIV Golf know his thoughts following his impressive victory at Wentworth on Sunday. The Irishman saw off two of his European Ryder Cup teammates in Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, winning the event by one shot at 17-under-par.

Lowry carded an impressive seven-under 65 on Sunday - his fourth straight bogey-free round of the week - to take home the DP World Tour’s flagship crown. It was a controversial few days at the home of European golf, with 18 LIV Golf players making their return to the tour.

Their attendance carried on the sport’s ongoing civil, and Lowry had time to take another jibe at the breakaway circuit following his win.

Lowry said: “I’m the happiest man in the world right now. I love it here and I’ve contended in the past. This means so much to me…

“I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself, first and foremost, but also for this tour and everyone that’s stayed loyal to this tour. I feel like this is one for the good guys.”

Lowry had made no secret of his thoughts towards LIV Golf and its returning players across the week, revealing ahead of the tournament that he ‘ couldn’t stand ’ certain Saudi defectors competing at Wentworth.

“I can't say I'm 100% OK with everyone being here, but some of the guys, I kind of don't mind them being here because of what they've done on the tour over the years," he told Sky Sports.

"There are certain guys that I can't stand being here, to be honest, and I don't like it that they're here." One man on the other side of the argument is Patrick Reed, who became one of the game’s marquee names to make the move over the summer.

Reed himself was back on the DP World Tour this week, and hit out at Lowry's Olympic teammate, McIlroy for his ‘ disrespectful’ comments surrounding the Saudi-backed series. He told The Times : “I feel like [Rory] making those types of comments is insulting.

“Let’s be honest, I’ve [played the DP World Tour] more consistently than some of the Europeans on the PGA Tour, so for them to take shots at other guys, especially Billy [Horschel] and Rory taking shots at the LIV guys saying they shouldn’t be here.”
