BMW Motorrad's Financials Are Still Good, They Just Keep Selling a Load of Bikes

BMW Motorrad's Q3 2024 motorcycle delivery numbers are in, and they're down slightly as compared to Q3 of 2023. But it's a very slight decrease, and when you see the actual numbers, it's still a lot of bikes that the company is moving worldwide.

By the OEM's own guidance, the firm expects to stay about even with last year's sales when the final year-end report is tallied. What kind of numbers are we talking about? In Q3 of 2024, BMW delivered a total of 50,364 motorcycles worldwide. That's down 3.2 percent year over year on Q3 of 2023, when BMW delivered 52,037 bikes to customers.

As for the first three quarters of 2024, how are the sales figures looking there? From January 1 through September 30, 2024, BMW Motorrad delivered a total of 163,436 motorcycles to customers worldwide. That represents a 0.9 percent decrease over the number of deliveries from January 1 through September 30, 2023, when BMW delivered 164,908 bikes.

To be clear, that's less than a one percent decrease, year on year. Or, in real numbers, that's a difference of 1,472 bikes. We'll have to see how the numbers work out for Q4 of 2024, but since those are still in the future at the time of writing, those will just have to wait until the beginning of 2025 when the year-end report is released.

A single quarter doesn't really tell you much on its own for any company, though, so I went back to 2022 and pulled the data to chart how BMW Motorrad's motorcycle deliveries have changed over time. Here they are, plotted out by quarter, from Q1 of 2022 through to Q3 of 2024, which is the most recent period for which we have data available.

With the exception of three quarters (Q2 of 2022 , Q4 of 2023, and Q3 of 2024), quarterly motorcycle deliveries have generally shown a strong trend of increasing year over year. In the case of Q3 of 2024, the difference is very close (under 2,000 bikes).

And if you look at motorcycle deliveries on a yearly basis, the trend is even more clearly positive. Here are BMW Motorrad's yearly motorcycle delivery figures from 2021 through 2023 (remember, we've only just completed Q3 of 2024, so 2024 annual numbers aren't available just yet).

BMW Group says it's expecting 2024's annual numbers to be in line with 2023's, so we'll have to see if that's what the numbers tell us once they're out in early 2025.

And finally, if you've been wondering how many motorcycles BMW Motorrad has produced on a yearly basis from 2021 through 2023, I've got a chart just for you.

As you can see, the company produces slightly more bikes than it sells on a yearly basis, which makes total sense. If you're an OEM, you want to make sure your products are available for people to buy, but you also don't want to have too many bikes for the current level of demand.

Regarding specific motorcycle models, BMW doesn't break down its sales numbers (at least, not the public-facing ones) by model. Still, any way you cut it, that is a lot of bikes. Definitely more than Harleys...
