Bluey to get first full-length animated film from producer of The Lego Movie

A Bluey movie is in the works - (Disney+)

A Bluey movie is officially in the works.

BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company have confirmed that the hit Australian cartoon series is getting the big screen treatment.

Bluey follows the adventures of a six-year-old Blue Heeler dog called Bluey along with her little sister Bingo, their parents Chilli and Bandit, plus, an array of colourful friends and extended family members.

Since debuting in 2018, Bluey has become an award-winning global phenomenon deemed essential viewing not just by kids, but adults too, who can’t seem to get enough of Bluey’s canine capers.

To-date, there are three seaons of seven-minute episodes and earlier this year, a 28-minute special titled The Sign received a limited theatrical run whetting the appetite for a feature-length adventure.

Fans will have a little bit of a wait on their hands however as the Bluey movie is not set for release until 2027, when it will hit cinemas worldwide followed by streaming on Disney+.

Written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brum, the CG animated film will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith, who was also behind Happy Feet, The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie.

The film will feature vocal talent including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, who will return as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler.

Plus, there will be music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush.

Brum said of the latest iteration of Bluey: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.

“I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”

Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, co-chairmen, Disney Entertainment, added: “Since its debuton Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection.

“We are so proud to expand our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the bigs screen - for real life! - and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”
