Bluestar anniversary: Punjab has not seen charged up atmosphere in decades

JALANDHAR: After popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder on Sunday, Punjab DGP V K Bhawra said his security was also curtailed along with over 400 others as police deployment was being increased due to Operation Bluestar anniversary aka Ghallughara week. The Punjab government made the same plea in Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday and added that security of all 426 people would be restored fully from June 7.

Looking at the deployment in Punjab, 20 companies of paramilitary forces are already out in the field, and from the Punjab government’s statements it may appear to those living outside Punjab that anniversary of the ‘Battle of Amritsar’, as Sikh circles often refer to it, leads to a charged-up atmosphere in the state. However, things on the ground remain different and much quieter.
