Blue Peter time capsule opening a let down for This Morning's Phil and Holly

Presenters of the ITV This Morning programme, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, were left less than impressed after they opened a Blue Peter time capsule from 40 years ago.

It was buried on the famous BBC kids show in 1981, and former presenter Sarah Greene joined Phil and Holly for the opening of it, talking excitedly about what they were expecting to be in there. However they were left sorely disappointed, reports the Mirror.

Instead of the hoped for tapes of the Blue Peter theme tune, clips from the show and even maybe a script from that very day on Blue Peter, they were met with a mess of brown stuff.

One of them said: "I feel like a spider's going to come out of there," as they all leaned in to look what they found. As the studio descended into laughter as the camera panned to what was inside the box, Holly held her hand over her nose and mouth because of the smell.

Meanwhile Phil looked into the box and said: "Well look at that," showing the camera the box as Holly quizzed whether one of the Blue Peter dogs had put something into the box before it was closed over four decades ago.

It was explained later in the show what had happened to the box. The metal lining in the box had corroded and attacked everything inside, but they did manage to rescue some crisp wrappers and sweet wrappers of the day and there was also a disc of a recording of the original theme tune for Blue Peter - but it was unlikely to be playable.

Fans were disappointed to see the contents - or lack of - in the box.

"Oh I’m gutted the time capsules not survived @thismorning @RealSarahGreene #ThisMorning," one wrote, as another fan of the BBC show, who watched it being buried, added: "Crikey, this makes me feel old. I remember watching when they buried that time capsule. I bet they thought it would be there longer than 41 years! #ThisMorning."

A third shared: "I remember the time capsule being buried in the Blue Peter garden - feels a bit sad @thismorning are opening it already. #ThisMorning," whilst a fourth penned: "What a waste of 40 years , try plastic or glass casing next time."
