Blossoms and Rick Astley to perform Smiths covers at Glastonbury tonight

Blossoms and Rick Astley are set to reunite at Glastonbury for a special performance of Smiths covers. The Stockport indie rockers have previously performed alongside the Never Gonna Give You Up star, including at a gig at Manchester's Albert Hall in 2021.

This evening, Worthy Farm is set to be transformed into a Manchester indie disco with classics such as This Charming Man and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out being covered by the unlikely musical pairing.

Both acts pair are set to come together once again for a last minute set on the Woodsies' stage at 6pm. The band posted a picture of them together and confirmed the gig, which had not previously been announced until this afternoon.

The slot had only been marked as 'TBA' on the official Glastonbury line up. Rick, from Newton-le-Willows, has already performed at Glastonbury today.

He was first on the Pyramid Stage this afternoon, for a well received set which included covers of AC/DC's Highway to Hell, during which he played drums, as well as his own version of Harry Styles song As It Was.

After Blossoms announced the gigs with Rick in 2021, the band's frontman Tom Ogden said: "The Smiths have always meant so much to Blossoms, with even their rainiest songs complete with wry humour and soul-reaching musicianship and melody. Their poppier moments are pure, joyful, danceable poetry.

"Imagine backing Rick Astley to play the songs of The Smiths? We’ve had wilder dreams, but not many.

"We’ll barely be able to believe it until it happens, but the dates are set, we’re studying every note, line and beat to say ‘thank you’ to The Smiths alongside Rick and do both of them proud."
