'Bloody warm': winter Paralympians want earlier Games

Australian para-alpine skier Josh Hanlon has joined the campaign to schedule the Paralympics earlier after enduring a "rough as guts" run on slushy snow.

Hanlon said he "felt like shit" as he completed his second run down Cortina's Olympia delle Tofane course, with the NSW product finishing 10th in the men's giant slalom sitting on Friday.

He was the only Australian alpine skier to compete on Friday after six-time Paralympic gold medallist Michael Milton withdrew following a course inspection.

Hanlon said the course felt like a "minefield" as officials hurriedly tried to keep it intact between runs.

Out of the 37-strong field in just the sitting event, 18 athletes failed to finish from two runs.

"It's just really warm, so the snow's just turned to slush," Hanlon said.

"They have salted a lot, and it has worked on some turns, but on some patches, it's just blown through that layer of ice that the salts created.

"They're doing everything they can. It's just too warm to be trying to get a good ski race in."

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said holding the Paralympics in Italy during spring had caused "both construction and snow-condition challenges".

And Alpine skiing wasn't the only event affected by warm weather.

The snowboard banked slalom was brought forward a day earlier, with the course losing up to 10 centimetres of snow a day.

Australian snowboard star Ben Tudhope overcame the late change in schedule to claim bronze in the men's SB-LL2 event on Friday.

While the Winter Paralympics are normally held two weeks after the Olympics, the first four Games occurred in January (1984, 1988) and February (1976, 1980).

"We definitely need to re-evaluate the timing of it, for sure," Hanlon said.

"Maybe it's an option that we're the ones going into the village first in January before the Olympics, if that's possible, because it's bloody warm in March at the moment.

"It has been for the last few seasons. I don't think we've really got any decent World Cup races in March the last few years, so what do you really expect?"

AAP travelled to Cortina d'Ampezzo as a guest of Paralympics Australia.
