If you have watched any recent game showcase, you already know that a PS5 remake of Bloodborne consistently tops fans’ wish lists.
According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, plans to remake the cult classic were explored in early 2025 but ultimately shelved after FromSoftware declined to move forward.
The gothic action RPG, originally released in 2015 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, is widely regarded as one of the strongest titles in Sony’s modern catalog. Despite its critical acclaim, the game has long been criticized for technical issues, including inconsistent frame rates, making it a natural candidate for a modern overhaul.
According to the Bloomberg report, the remake pitch came from Bluepoint Games, the Texas-based studio known for high-fidelity remakes such as Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, which has enjoyed a good reception. The developer had internally discussed the possibility of revisiting Bloodborne for years, and the idea was said to make commercial sense within PlayStation.
However, FromSoftware reportedly did not want the project to proceed. While Sony owns the Bloodborne intellectual property, sources indicate that the Japanese developer was reluctant to see another studio reinterpret the game.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida previously suggested a theory last year that FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki may prefer to revisit Bloodborne himself, but has been too occupied with other projects, and may not want anyone else handling it in the meantime.
FromSoftware has been fantastic at building distinct, challenging worlds that resonate with players for years. From Dark Souls to Elden Ring, the studio has carved out a reputation for meticulous design, punishing combat, and deeply atmospheric storytelling, which is part of why it remains protective of its most beloved titles like Bloodborne.
Without FromSoftware’s support, the remake never entered production.
The rejection marked a significant setback for Bluepoint, which had struggled to secure a new project following the cancellation of a live service God of War spin-off earlier this year. After failing to land another greenlit concept, the studio was ultimately shut down by Sony, ending a five-year run under the PlayStation Studios banner.
For many fans, the news is another blow to hopes of seeing Bloodborne updated for modern hardware. The game remains playable on PS5 via backward compatibility, but without enhancements or a dedicated next-gen version.
