'A shield of love': the Canberrans who served in Afghanistan

Looking down from an uncomfortable C-130 troop carrier aircraft, trussed up in battle armour and craning for her first look at the country that was about to become her temporary home, Denna Fryer was astounded by what she saw.

The Australian War Memorial will host a service to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the Afghanistan War on Sunday. "I just remember looking out the window and thinking how beautiful Afghanistan was, I'd never seen anything like it," said Ms Fryer.
