Authorities in Mobile County, Alabama, are investigating the disappearance of Aurelia Choc Cac, 40, and her two children: 17-year-old Niurka Zuleta and 2-year-old Anthony Garcia Choc, who were last seen at their home on Friday, Jan. 30.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office reported signs of a struggle inside the residence and believes the family may have been taken against their will.
Blood was found throughout the home, clothes were dumped across the bedroom, a hamper was missing, and even a mattress had disappeared. Cash and cell phones were left behind, raising further concerns.
Neighbors described Aurelia, originally from Guatemala, as living a quiet life. Maurice Simmons, a neighbor, told authorities that he had spoken with Aurelia on Friday evening and she gave no indication of planning to leave.
In a 911 call, he mentioned a "crazy ex-boyfriend" who had been on the run for months, though authorities have yet to confirm a suspect.
Sheriff Paul Burch noted there were no signs of forced entry, but the scene suggested a struggle had taken place. Authorities initially named Juan Antonio Garcia, Anthony’s father, as a person of interest, but he has since been cleared and was reportedly in Texas at the time.
Investigators are now collaborating with the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.
Cac and Niurka were under final deportation orders issued in April. Their oldest daughter, Lorena, has made a heartfelt plea for their safe return: “Whoever did this, please bring my little brother home. I’m waiting for them to come home with the little baby.”
Descriptions:
Aurelia Choc Cac: 5 feet tall, 140 lbs, black hair; last seen in a maroon jacket and tan joggers.
Niurka Zuleta: 5 feet 1 inch, 100 lbs, black hair; last seen in a black top and plaid pants.
Anthony Garcia Choc: 30 lbs, black hair; last seen in a cartoon character hoodie and blue jeans.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office at 251-574-8633.
“This is very unusual,” said Sheriff Burch. “We’re exploring every possibility and hoping to find them safe.”
