Blizzard has confirmed that "Diablo 4" will not receive another major expansion after "Lord of Hatred." The expansion will serve as the final major addition to the game's story.
The announcement signals a change in Blizzard's long-term plans for the action RPG. "Diablo 4" launched in June 2023 and has received regular updates, seasonal content, and major expansions since then.
Its first expansion, "Vessel of Hatred," launched in 2024. "Lord of Hatred" arrived earlier this year and concluded the game's Age of Hatred storyline.
Many players expected Blizzard to follow that storyline with another expansion and begin a new chapter. That will not happen.
'Diablo 4' Seasons Will Continue
The end of major expansions does not mean Blizzard is abandoning "Diablo 4."
The game will continue receiving seasonal updates. These seasons will give Blizzard a way to add new content while keeping players engaged with the existing game.
According to PCGamer, "Diablo" game director Brent Gibson confirmed the direction during BlizzCon 2026. Gibson said that the development team is now concentrating on seasonal content while also looking toward the future of the franchise.
This strategy could allow Blizzard to continue developing the world of "Diablo 4" without the lengthy development cycle required for a full expansion.
Seasonal content could also become an important link between "Diablo 4" and the next mainline game.
'Diablo 5' Will Continue the Story
Blizzard also officially announced "Diablo 5" during BlizzCon 2026.
The next installment will take place 100 years after the events of "Diablo 4." By that point in the timeline, Diablo has conquered Sanctuary.
The major time jump gives Blizzard considerable freedom when creating the next chapter of the series. It also creates opportunities to explore what happens between the two games.
Some of those events could potentially be developed through "Diablo 4" seasons.
Gibson also explained that Blizzard wants to see how players react to individual seasons. Their response could help influence how the game's story develops before "Diablo 5" arrives.
Diablo 5 Details Are Still Limited
Blizzard has not revealed many details about "Diablo 5" yet. The game remains several years away from release.
The studio has, however, already revealed some of the game's initial classes. The lineup includes two returning favorites alongside a completely new class.
Some 'Diablo 4' Players May Be Disappointed
The decision may still frustrate some longtime players, GameRant reported.
"Diablo 3" and "Diablo 4" were released 11 years apart. Because of that lengthy gap, some fans expected "Diablo 4" to receive several expansions before the next numbered game arrived.
Instead, Blizzard appears ready to move toward "Diablo 5" after only a few years of Diablo 4 support.
However, the current game is not being shut down. Seasonal updates will continue, giving players new content while Blizzard works on the next installment.
