A drug driver who did more than 70mph in a 20 zone during a police pursuit has walked free from court.
Jay Jackson had no licence or insurance when police spotted him driving a Mercedes at speed in Blaydon, Gateshead, in February. Officers followed him and activated their blue lights and siren but he failed to stop.
He drove erratically, overtaking another car, doing 70mph in a 20 zone, going through a red light, going through no entry signs and evading a police stinger at the last moment. After a chase lasting around 20 minutes, he eventually crashed, causing damage to his car and leading to the air bags being deployed.

When police caught up with him his eyes were glazed and he smelled strongly of cannabis. Tests showed he was above the limit for driving with the drug in his system.
Jackson, 20, of Bircham Drive, Blaydon, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drug driving, having no licence and having no insurance. He was sentenced to six months suspended for 18 months and a three year driving ban at Newcastle Crown Court.
Recorder Nathan Adams told him: "It was absolutely horrendous behaviour on your part. It would have been absolutely terrifying for anyone living in this area or any other car drivers on the road."
Rachel Hedworth, defending, said: "He is utterly remorseful. He has had a terrible existence from a very young age. He is a vulnerable individual."
