A man who stabbed a stranger at a Scots train station has today been jailed. Dominic Douglas, 33, knifed Lewis Rooney, 28, on the platform at Hamilton Central on March 13, 2021, shortly after he got off the train with his partner.
The brute stabbed his victim in the stomach, chest and back during the horrifying blade attack, which left Rooney with a punctured lung and injured liver. The victim was rushed to hospital for life-saving surgery and the wounds he suffered continue to have a substantial impact on his life.
Douglas, of Hillside Crescent in Hamilton, fled the scene but was caught by British Transport Police (BTP) officers following a thorough and extensive investigation. He pled guilty to assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger to life on Friday, November 18, 2022, and has now been caged for five years over the sickening attack.
The High Court in Glasgow previously heard Douglas received a call from a 15-year-old boy claiming he had been hit with a hammer. He jumped in his car and headed to the station after the teenager and his friends had gotten into a violent row with Rooney.
Detective Chief Inspector Marc Francey said: “This was a brutal attack. The two men had never spoken, never met, and had never crossed paths until that day. Clearly this was a terrifying situation for the victim and his partner. This attack and the injuries he suffered continues to have a substantial impact on his life.
“I would like to thank to the members of public who assisted us with our inquiries and the officers who carried out a diligent and pain-staking investigation, which meant that we were able to quickly identify and detain Douglas.
“He is evidently a danger to the public and the judge saw fit to ensure he faces the consequences equal to the severity of this attack.”
