Blackpool Zoo's giant tortoise Darwin has died aged 105-years-old

Blackpool Zoo's giant tortoise Darwin has died aged 105-years-old. The Aldabra tortoise - the zoo's oldest animal - had to be put to sleep after developing a severe leg problem. "Despite all the best efforts of his keepers and veterinary team, and consulting with leading worldwide reptile veterinarians, sadly there was no cure; his condition deteriorated and the very difficult decision was made to put him to sleep," the zoo said in a statement.

Darwin, who arrived in Blackpool in 1972, was one of the most popular attractions at the the zoo, and was often the first animal visitors saw at the tortoise enclosure just inside the entrance. The zoo added: "Darwin was thought to be around 105 years old, although we don’t have an exact age as there are no detailed records of his history. However, we do know that he is an irreplaceable feature of the Blackpool Zoo’s history.

"He had a personality on par with his size, making him a hugely popular member of our zoo family and was loved by all of our visitors. Staff and keepers are extremely saddened at his passing and are being comforted by the kind messages of condolence we are receiving."

Animal-lovers have been passing on their condolences to zoo-keepers. Rachel Mayhew wrote: "Lucky enough to see Darwin last year when the zoo reopened, what a wonderful creature he was to watch. Thinking of his keepers and the staff at the zoo during this time."

Janet Hardware said: Sorry to hear of the passing of Darwin. He was always the first wow we said at the beginning of our visit. We will miss him. Condolences to all who cared for him. He will be a huge loss."
