Blackpool Pleasure Beach minimum wage breach 'was payroll oversight'

Blackpool Pleasure Beach bosses have blamed a 'payroll oversight' after finding themselves in the spotlight for breaching minimum wage regulations.

The renowned theme park, which earned recognition as one of the world's finest themeparks, has been included in a government-released list of 200 companies that failed to adhere to minimum wage requirements during the period spanning 2017 to 2019. All the companies on the list have repaid the outstanding sums and have faced financial penalties.

At Blackpool Pleasure Beach, 12 employees were found to have been underpaid, totalling £2,866, reports LancsLive.

A spokesperson said: "This pertains to a minor oversight in our payroll processes that occurred between 2017 and 2019, involving 12 individuals, which has now been rectified."

The government said: "While not all cases of minimum wage underpayment are deliberate, there is no excuse for depriving workers of their rightful wages."

The businesses listed range from major high street brands to small enterprises and independent traders. Kevin Hollinrake, minister for enterprise, markets and small business, said: "Adhering to the legal minimum wage is non-negotiable, and businesses of all sizes should know better than to short change their hardworking staff."

"While the majority of businesses do right by their employees, we are sending a clear message to the minority who choose to flout the law - pay your workers fairly, or be prepared to face the consequences."

The esteemed TripAdvisor Best of The Best awards for 2023 were announced earlier this week. Blackpool Pleasure Beach secured a place in the 'Amusement and Water Parks' category for the best things to do, coming eighth.
