Blackpool hotel guest slammed by owner after they find 'brown stain that wasn't chocolate'

Owners of a local bed and breakfast in Blackpool hit out at a guest who said they were 'accused of “sh***ing the bed“.

Following a scathing review left on TripAdvisor, the owners of the Newholme Hotel, on Hornby Road, responded claiming the guests were "rude to staff and the stain on the sheets was brown but was not chocolate".

LancsLive reports that the Newholme Hotel is popular choice for guests in the seaside town. Owner have described the hotel as 'a high end budget hotel with seven comfortable adult only en-suite rooms, a relaxed lounge/bar and locally sourced cooked meals."

They add that each room is fitted with Wi-Fi and they "know you'll enjoy your stay". All rooms are spacious and "designed to fit anyone's budget and taste."

The hotel is one of 428 small hotels in Blackpool listed on TripAdvisor. Previous guests have taken to the site the leave their reviews on their stay with many leaving 'excellent' or 'very good reviews'.

Overall the hotel is rated four and half out five on TripAdvisor with just under 260 review left on the site. Some of the more recent reviews commented on the services provided at the hotel and the 'warm' welcome they received from the staff.

One guest wrote: "We have just returned from a 2 day stay at the Newholme. We got a friendly welcome and given an upgraded room. We were expecting to drop our luggage and then go and find paid parking.

"It was pointed out to us we could get free parking directly opposite the hotel which was great for the duration of our stay. Great plentiful breakfast. The location was great and exactly were we like to be as we are frequent visitors to Blackpool. Owners were friendly and we would be happy to stay there again."

Another said this: "Well what can I say, the staff were polite, the room was comfortable, clean and tidy, the little touches in the room really went above and beyond what we expected, the choice of breakfast options was really good, they catered for everyone’s dietary needs, the B'n'B was really good value for money, we will be recommending."

One guest left this review: "We were treated to lovely warm rooms, comfortable beds and a wide choice of excellent breakfasts. Very close to the sea front and town, both of which were just a 5 minute walk away. A visit to the Tower Ballroom was on the bucket list for one of our group; she loved it! Thanks guys."

However, not everyone was happy with the services they received and in fact, one guest claimed they had been accused of soiling the bed in the room. In a recent review left about a stay in October 2022, the guest left a lengthy comment detailing the issues with their stay.

They kicked off the review with details on how they booked. They said: "Our first holiday since going through chemotherapy we found this ‘ hotel ‘ on the Groupon website and called before buying the Groupon voucher to make sure of availability. The guy who answered said were full for Groupon but would honour the price if you paid over the phone we thought fair enough….. Firstly if your thinking of doing this be careful as they have your bank details!…. As we found out they can charge you for anything they like."

As the review continued, the guest spoke of what they saw and experience when they arrived to the hotel. They continued on to write: "We arrived on 17th, room was a bit on the small side for a double, we did notice in the shower it hadn’t been cleaned but thought as we get daily towels changed, and as the room is apparently cleaned daily IF you leave the door sign out it wasn’t an issue.

"The clean room door sign was left hanging on the door constant for 3 days, no cleaning??, on the Wednesday we hadn’t had a towel change so we asked Jay who kindly gave us two extra towels when asked “ what do you want me to do with the old towels?…. His reply was “ just keep them in your room “. Not sure where we’re going to keep, wet / damp towels but oh well they got [thrown] into the shower floor whilst we weren’t using it and on the bathroom floor when it was in use."

The guest claimed that things got worse for them when they got home. They added: "Here’s the issue, on checking out the towels were dirty from there floor, from there shower / bathroom which hadn’t been cleaned. On our way home we received an email / invoice for £50!!! To cover the cost of replacing said towels ( don’t give them your bank details ). The bed sheet has a chocolate stain on…. The buyer accused us of “ sh***ing the bed “ and his attitude on the phone stank.

"I disputed the £50 charge with my bank who laughed at the hotel when I explained, thankfully they refunded me the £50 charge and have since gone on to reclaim it back from the Newholme, but they did advise me to cancel my bank card as this ‘ hotel ‘ might try and steal the money back again ….. so you really want to stay in a place like this?????

"And finally there are signs in the hotel about no takeaways of any kind are allowed in to the room due to hygiene …… oh the irony ….. we did order a cheeky takeaway on our final night and literally within 30 seconds Jay was knocking the door telling us no takeaways and to eat it outside . Yes they do watch you on the cctv and ring doorbells."

The owners didn't take long to leave a short yet blunt response to the guests claims. They wrote: "Basically you were rude to staff and the stain on the sheets was brown but was not chocolate. Also you brought takeaway onto the premises after being asked not to then grease stain didn't come out so you were charged for replacements."
