Blackburn Rovers make big contract decision that will benefit Nottingham Forest

Blackburn Rovers have triggered the one-year extension in Ben Brereton Diaz's contract - and that spells good news for Nottingham Forest.

Brereton Diaz's deal was due to expire this summer but the decision by Rovers' hierarchy to activate the clause in his contract keeps him at the club until June 2023.

The move comes as the forward continues to be linked with a big summer move, with West Ham, Leeds United and Sevilla all linked with the 23-year-old.

Rovers' decision means they can now demand a bigger transfer fee, but that also benefits Forest who reportedly had a sell-on clause inserted in the deal which took Brereton Diaz to Ewood Park from the Reds in 2019.

Had Rovers not activated the clause, they would have risked it being settled via compensation given the player is under the age of 24.

Brereton Diaz's stock has risen considerably over the last year having become a regular for the Chile international team and he finished the Championship campaign with 22 goals.

That has led to a host of clubs regularly checking in on the forward with West Ham boss David Moyes reportedly calling upon his former assistant Alan Irvine to run the rule over the forward recently.

It has been reported that a £20m price tag has been placed on the forward.
