Blackburn Rovers boss hopeful of Leeds United man's return next week as promotion run in looms

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray is hopeful that Leeds United winger Ian Poveda could return to the club next week. Poveda has been back at Thorp Arch in the last few months undergoing rehabilitation on his left ankle after he suffered a fracture and ligament damage in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City in November.

Poveda signed a season long loan deal with Rovers last summer in a quest for regular game time but suffered the injury just as he was finding some form. Blackburn have continued to honour the contributions that the two clubs agreed last summer and therefore Mowbray is keen to get him back to the club with a view to him playing some part in the run in.

Rovers currently sit seventh in the Championship, just two points adrift of the top six, meaning Poveda could still have a big part to play in the final few games of the season. Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray is confident that Poveda will be involved before the conclusion of the campaign.

He said: “No, I don’t think so. I spoke to Leeds yesterday. He’s on the training ground working hard, he hasn’t played any football yet in terms of games, and between Leeds, the boy and ourselves we’ll decide whether he comes and gets involved for the last few weeks of the season with us

“We’ll then have to assess how he looks on the grass and whether we think he could help us or not. We’re still paying our contribution towards his salary so if he’s fit then he should be back and we’ll try and negotiate that he comes back next week.”
