David Jonsson Black Panther: Marvel Studios has officially found the next actor to carry one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most emotional legacies. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, director Ryan Coogler confirmed that David Jonsson will star in Black Panther 3 as the grown-up Prince T'Challa, the son of the late King T'Challa and Nakia.
The announcement marks a major turning point for the Black Panther franchise, which has been navigating the future of Wakanda since the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Rather than recasting Boseman's character, Marvel is moving the story forward through the next generation.

Who is David Jonsson, the new Black Panther?
David Jonsson has quickly become one of Britain's most promising young actors.
The 32-year-old first earned recognition for his role in the HBO/BBC drama Industry, before gaining wider attention for his performance in Alien: Romulus. More recently, he starred in The Long Walk, the adaptation of Stephen King's novel that further cemented his reputation as a rising Hollywood talent.
Now, Jonsson is stepping into one of Marvel's biggest franchises as the adult version of Prince T'Challa, a character briefly introduced at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
How Prince T'Challa was introduced in the MCU
Fans first met the young prince during the emotional closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In that scene, Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong'o, revealed that she and King T'Challa had secretly raised a son away from Wakanda. Although the boy was known as Toussaint, she also revealed his Wakandan name—T'Challa—honoring his late father.
That ending hinted the Black Panther legacy would continue through the next generation instead of replacing Chadwick Boseman's character.
Ryan Coogler confirms Black Panther 3 at Comic-Con
After years of speculation, Ryan Coogler officially announced Black Panther 3 during Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at Comic-Con.
Coogler will return as writer and director, while Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are set to reprise their roles. Marvel also confirmed that the film will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028 and will be shot in 70mm large-format film, giving the next Wakanda adventure a more cinematic look.

Taking the stage after the announcement, Jonsson admitted he was overwhelmed by the opportunity to become part of the Black Panther franchise.
"Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege, the blessing to join... Believe me, the honor is entirely mine."
The audience responded with loud applause as Jonsson appeared alongside Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Why Marvel chose not to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa
Following Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer, Marvel made the unprecedented decision not to recast King T'Challa.
Instead, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever focused on Shuri's journey while quietly laying the foundation for the future through the introduction of T'Challa's son.
By casting David Jonsson as the grown-up prince, Marvel is preserving Boseman's legacy while allowing a new chapter of Wakanda's story to unfold.
Denzel Washington also joins Black Panther 3
Another major surprise revealed during the Comic-Con panel was the confirmation that Denzel Washington will appear in Black Panther 3.
Ryan Coogler has previously spoken about wanting to work with the Oscar-winning actor for years, and the filmmaker confirmed that a role was written specifically for him. However, Marvel has not yet disclosed details about Washington's character.
