Black History Month 2024: What is it, when is it, how to celebrate

Black History Month is here again, marking the annual celebration and homage to Black history, achievements, and contributions throughout time.

First celebrated in the UK in 1987, Black History Month was first introduced by Akyaaba Addai Sebo, a member of the Greater London Council.

As well as celebrating Black history and culture, the event also aims to reduce discrimination against Black people and foster racial equality.

Highlighting the outstanding contributions of Black people to society and the world helps to break down people’s prejudices.

After all, there were 19,586 incidences of racist hate crime reported by the London Metropolitan Police in the 2022/23 reporting year, underlining the ongoing need for events like Black History Month.

Read on to learn how you can celebrate Black History Month 2024 in London.

When is Black History Month 2024?

Black History Month is celebrated in October, starting from the 1st of the month.

There are events scheduled throughout the month, with this year’s theme being ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.

“By emphasising this theme, we shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore our commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage,” reads the statement on the BHM website.

How to celebrate Black History Month in London

There are hundreds of events going on in London throughout October to celebrate Black History Month.

That includes educational events, such as historical walking tours or lectures, to creative performances from Black poets, actors, musicians, and more.

You can browse a full directory of Black History Month events in Greater London here.

If you have an idea that you don’t see represented, you can also get involved with hosting your own event. BHM organisers have put together a resource pack to help people get involved on their own terms.

It also includes plenty of resources to teach others, geared towards people of all ages.
